Challenges in Big Data Analytics and the Role of Computation

and Visual Analytics

The recent advancement in data generation, storage, transfer, and sharing poses a great challenge in turning raw data into useful knowledge. Due to special characteristics of modern data sets such as extremely large volume, high dimensionality, complex relationships, incompleteness, high velocity and variety, to name a few, new methods for analytics are required for effective knowledge extraction. These great challenges pose opportunities since the analysis of Big Data has the potential to provide unprecedented knowledge, which can in turn lead to advancements in science and engineering and economic development.

In this talk, using the examples of US NSF/DHS FODAVA (Foundations of Data and Visual Analytics) Center and US DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency)’s XDATA project, both of which I have lead, I will show the critical role that computational sciences and visual analytics can play in Big Data analytics illustrating some real-life problems and discoveries involving document data sets such as automatic topic discovery in Wikipedia, news articles, twitter data, as well as image and network data analysis.
